Riteish Deshmukh trained as an architect, acted in comedies and started Imagine Meats in 2021. His career and ventures, per his biography.

Riteish Deshmukh trained as an architect, built a career in comedies and thrillers, and in 2021 added a food business to the list. This piece follows his Wikipedia biography, which sets out the career, the Marathi films and the plant-based venture.
Mumbai, a political family and an architecture degree
According to the biography, Deshmukh was born on 17 December 1978 in Mumbai to Vilasrao Deshmukh, a former Chief Minister of Maharashtra, and Vaishali Deshmukh. His brothers Amit and Dhiraj Deshmukh have both been MLAs. He studied at G. D. Somani Memorial School, earned an architecture degree from Kamla Raheja College of Architecture in Mumbai, practised for a year with an overseas firm and continued designing after returning to India. He also studied at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute. He still owns a stake in Evolutions, an architectural and interior design firm.
Debut and comedies
He made his screen debut in Tujhe Meri Kasam (2003) opposite Genelia D'Souza, which was a commercial success and earned a Screen Award nomination for Best Male Debut. His third film, the comedy Masti (2004), was his turning point. It earned him the Screen Award for Best Comedian and the Zee Cine Award for Best Actor in a Comic Role. Several films followed, including Bluffmaster! (2005), Heyy Babyy (2007), Housefull (2010) and Grand Masti (2013). He also won praise for playing a serial killer in Ek Villain (2014).
The biography does not hide the weaker years: Bardaasht, Naach, Home Delivery and Mr Ya Miss did poorly, and Bank Chor (2017) was a commercial failure. Housefull 4 (2019), in which he played a classical dancer and a modern boy, became his highest-grossing film to that date, and the biography notes it ended a run of box office failures that began after Housefull 3.
Marathi cinema and direction
In 2013 he launched the production house Mumbai Film Company with the Marathi film Balak Palak. In 2014 he produced Yellow, which won a National Film Special Jury Award, and acted for the first time in Marathi in Lai Bhaari. His directing debut, Ved (2022), produced by Genelia, became the highest-grossing Marathi film of 2022, and he was nominated for the Filmfare Award for Best Director in Marathi. Raja Shivaji (2026), in which he directed and played Chhatrapati Shivaji, is described in the biography as the highest-grossing Marathi film of all time. In 2025 he played a corrupt politician in Raid 2 and appeared in Housefull 5.
The food business
In 2021, the biography says, Deshmukh became an entrepreneur and started a plant-based meat brand with his wife, called Imagine Meats. The biography gives no further details, such as products, sales or funding, so this article does not add any. It also lists him as a celebrity endorser of brands including Pril Dishwash, a board member of the Mumbai Academy of the Moving Image, and captain of the Mumbai Heroes team in the Celebrity Cricket League.
Honours and public image
He has won a National Film Award, a Filmfare Award Marathi and five IIFA Awards. He appeared on the Forbes India Celebrity 100 list in 2012, ranked 60th with an estimated annual income of Rs 5.1 crore, and the Times Most Desirable Men list of 2011, at 40th.
