Akshay Kumar's 4 A.M. Routine: Early Nights, No Phone
Akshay Kumar wakes at 4 a.m., sleeps by 9 p.m. and skips the phone. His own account of the routine and the martial arts behind it.

Akshay Kumar is known for a disciplined lifestyle that starts well before dawn. In a stage conversation at the Amar Ujala Samvad, reported by The Indian Express, he described the day in his own words. This piece sets that routine beside what his biography records about his training in martial arts.
The day, as he tells it
The Indian Express quotes him saying, "My day starts at 4am-4.30am. I sleep early by 9pm-9.30pm." He joked that this is the only free time he gets with himself, because his wife and children are asleep and "there is no stress".
He then described what happens in those hours. He said he does not touch his phone, using the words "Phone to bilkul nahi, Instagram nahi," meaning no phone and no Instagram. After a stretch alone, he starts a workout that lasts an hour to an hour and a half. By then his children are awake, he has breakfast, goes to work and comes back in the evening.
Time alone, on purpose
The actor pitched the habit to the audience as something anyone could copy. "Every man needs 2-3 hours," he said, adding that people should find hours when they are alone with themselves. In his words, "You don't have to exercise at that time. You can just sit down, think, just gaze."
That framing matters, because the routine is not only about training. It is about a quiet block before the day begins, which he says suits his preference for day shifts. He said his Bade Miyan Chote Miyan co-star Tiger Shroff is also a day person, and that when they have night shifts both of them "curse" the producer and director.
Where the discipline comes from
His biography points to a long history with combat sports. According to his Wikipedia entry, he studied karate as a schoolboy at Don Bosco High School in Matunga and later earned a black belt in Taekwondo in India. He then went to Bangkok, where he lived for five years and learned Thai boxing, also called Muay Thai, while working as a chef and a waiter.
After returning to Bombay he taught martial arts. A parent of one of his students recommended him for modelling, and that led to an assignment for a furniture showroom. His first screen appearance, in Aaj (1987), was as a karate instructor. His breakthrough role came with the action thriller Khiladi in 1992, and the media still calls him "Khiladi Kumar".
The wider picture
A summary of his routine from an NDTV Food feature, as surfaced in search results, lists martial arts, swimming, yoga, stretching, meditation, kickboxing, parkour and trekking, done five to six times a week. We could read only the summary of that page, so treat the list as indicative. The Indian Express quote is the firmest source here and it covers sleep, wake time, phone use and workout length.
His career gives the habits some context. Wikipedia says he has appeared in more than 150 films over three decades, received two National Film Awards, and was given the Padma Shri in 2009. He also hosted Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi for four seasons,.
A personal choice
Nothing in these sources claims the schedule works for everyone. Kumar frames it as a habit that suits a man who prefers day shoots.
What we could not confirm
We could not open the NDTV Food page in full, so the exercise list and the weekly frequency come from a search summary. We did not find a recent interview that updates his routine after March 2024. We did not verify his diet, because no source we could read gave specifics.
