Rekha's career began on screen in 1958 and has outlasted several changes in what Hindi cinema asks of its leading women. Her Wikipedia biography, which cites reviews and official records, gives a clear outline: one National Film Award, three Filmfare Awards, the Padma Shri and six years in the Rajya Sabha. This profile follows that record.

The early years

Born Bhanurekha Ganesan on 10 October 1954, Rekha is the daughter of the actors Pushpavalli and Gemini Ganesan. She began as a child actress in the Telugu films Inti Guttu (1958) and Rangula Ratnam (1966), and her first lead was the Kannada film Operation Jackpot Nalli C.I.D 999 (1969). Her Hindi debut, Sawan Bhadon (1970), made her a rising star, though Wikipedia says she was often criticised in the press for her looks and weight.

The entry says she responded by working on her appearance, her acting technique and her command of Hindi, and describes the result as a well-publicised transformation. It marks 1978, with Ghar and Muqaddar Ka Sikandar, as the start of the most successful period of her career.

Awards across three decades

Her first Filmfare Award for Best Actress came for the comedy Khubsoorat (1980), a role the entry says was written specially for her by Hrishikesh Mukherjee. Her second came for Khoon Bhari Maang (1988), one of the early women-led revenge films, which Rakesh Roshan made with her in mind. Her third, in 1996, was in the Best Supporting Actress category for playing an underworld don in Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi, a part Wikipedia describes as against type.

The National Film Award for Best Actress was for Umrao Jaan (1981), in which she played a classical courtesan. In an interview that The Indian Express revisited, Rekha said she did not think she did anything special for the film.

Beyond the mainstream

The entry says that during the early 1980s she widened her range through parallel cinema, the movement of neo-realist art films. Her titles from that period include Kalyug (1981), Vijeta (1982) and Utsav (1984). In Shyam Benegal's Kalyug, a modern adaptation of the Mahabharata set in rival business houses, her role Supriya is based on Draupadi.

Later roles were praised too. Wikipedia credits her supporting performances in Zubeidaa and Lajja (both 2001) and notes that she played mothers in Koi... Mil Gaya (2003) and its superhero sequel Krrish (2006).

Honours and public service

The Government of India honoured her with the Padma Shri in 2010, the fourth-highest civilian honour, in the art category, as India Today's list of awardees records. In 2012 President Pratibha Patil nominated her to the Rajya Sabha on the recommendation of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, for her contribution to art. Her term began on 27 April 2012 and ran to 26 April 2018, according to Wikipedia.

The Rajya Sabha nomination is made under article 80 of the Constitution, which allows the President to nominate twelve members for expertise in specific fields.

How critics describe her

Wikipedia quotes Filmfare as saying that in terms of "style, sexiness or sheer onscreen presence, she's unparalleled". The entry says she has starred in more than 200 films and has often played strong and complicated women, from fictional characters to literary ones. It credits her with a reputation for reinventing herself.

What we could not confirm

We did not read Rekha's full Indian Express interview and rely on the headline summary for the quoted remark. We did not verify the Filmfare quotation independently. Her private life has been the subject of media speculation, and we have left it out because we found no on-record source. We found no recent source on her film work after 2014.
