Asha Bhosle, Singer, Cook and Restaurant Founder
Asha Bhosle said she would have been a cook if not a singer, and she founded the Asha's restaurant chain. Her career, per her biography.

Asha Bhosle spent more than eight decades as a playback singer, but she also said that if she had not become a singer she would have been a cook. That second talent became a restaurant chain. This piece, which follows her Wikipedia biography and a news report of her death, looks at the singer and the cook.
A career told in numbers
According to the biography, Bhosle was born Asha Mangeshkar on 8 September 1933 in Goar, a hamlet in the princely state of Sangli, into the musical family of the stage actor and classical singer Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar. When she was nine her father died, and the family moved from Pune to Kolhapur and then to Mumbai. She and her elder sister Lata Mangeshkar began singing and acting in films to support the family.
Her first film song was "Chala Chala Nav Bala" for the Marathi film Majha Bal (1943), and her Hindi debut was "Saawan Aaya" for Chunariya (1948). She sang in more than 20 Indian and foreign languages. In 2006 she said she had recorded over 12,000 songs, a figure the biography says several other sources repeated. The Guinness Book of World Records acknowledged her in 2011 as the most recorded artist in music history.
Working her way up
In the 1950s she sang more songs than most playback singers in Hindi films, mostly in low-budget productions. In Chham Chhama Chham (1952), composed by O. P. Nayyar, she sang 10 of 11 songs. Bimal Roy then gave her Parineeta (1953), and Raj Kapoor signed her for all the songs in Boot Polish (1954). Naya Daur (1957) was a major success, and the first film for which she sang all the songs for the lead actress.
Her work with R. D. Burman included Teesri Manzil (1966). The biography reports that she first doubted she could sing the western-style "Aaja Aaja", but refused his offer to change the music and finished it after ten rehearsal days. In 1981 she sang ghazals for Umrao Jaan, including "Dil Cheez Kya Hai".
The kitchen
The biography says Bhosle enjoyed cooking, and in an interview with The Times of India she said that had she not become a singer, she would have been a cook. She founded a restaurant chain, Asha's, which offers traditional north-western Indian cuisine. The article gives no figures on its size or number of outlets, so this piece does not either.
Stage and screen
She toured widely: concerts in Canada, Dubai, the UK and the US, and the 2007 tour "The Incredibles" with Sonu Nigam, Kunal Ganjawala and Kailash Kher, which was scheduled for twelve concerts and ran to more than twenty. In 2013 she made her acting debut in Mai. In 2023, on her 90th birthday, she performed a live show at Dubai's Coca-Cola Arena, where she sang and danced, saying at the press conference: "Mein iss film industry ki aakhri Mughal hoon", meaning "I am the last Mughal of the film industry".
Honours and her passing
She won the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2000 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2008. She won two National Film Awards, nine Filmfare Awards and a record seven Filmfare Awards for Best Female Playback Singer, and received two Grammy nominations.
She died on 12 April 2026 in Mumbai, aged 92. Her son Anand Bhosle confirmed her death, and news agencies including AP, Reuters and The Hindu reported it. Her last rites were held with full state honours at Shivaji Park on 13 April.
Note on sourcing
Lifestyle detail about her restaurants is thin in the biography, so this article is mostly about her singing career. Details of her private family life are in the biography, but are not retold here.
